Why Foundation Support Matters

When a foundation settles, the right repair depends on the structure, soil conditions, and cause of movement. Two commonly used deep foundation systems are steel push piers and helical piers. Both can transfer structural loads to more suitable bearing material below weak near-surface soils, but they are installed differently.

How Steel Push Piers Work

Steel push piers are sections of steel pipe hydraulically advanced into the ground using the weight of the existing structure as reaction. Once a suitable resistance is achieved under the project design, a bracket connects the pier system to the foundation. Push piers are often considered for existing foundations with adequate structural capacity for installation.

How Helical Piers Work

Helical piers are steel shafts with one or more helix-shaped plates. Installation equipment rotates them into the ground, much like a screw. Depending on design and site conditions, helical piers can be used for existing structure stabilization and new construction support. Their installation does not rely on the weight of an existing building in the same way as push piers.

Which Is Better for a Florida Home?

Neither system is automatically better. An appropriate recommendation considers foundation type, access, structural loads, subsurface conditions, nearby utilities, and engineering requirements. A site assessment helps determine whether deep foundation support is appropriate at all.

What Homeowners Should Ask

Ask what is causing the settlement, why a particular system is recommended, how the repair will be monitored, what restoration work is included, and what documentation or warranty applies. A clear explanation matters more than a one-size-fits-all promise.

Start With the Cause

If you have recurring cracks, sloping floors, or other signs of movement, Foundation Professionals of Florida can evaluate the concern and discuss appropriate repair options. Contact FPI to request a foundation estimate.
